Goods of the Body: Self Defense, part 1

YOU are responsible for your protection

Can Self-Defense Lessons Save Women During an Attack?

So you are eating better, moving more, and spending time handling the stress in your life in positive ways. As I pointed out in Goods of the Body: Your Physical Makeover, protecting yourself from harm is just as important to your health as antioxidants and strength training! You may be a terrific specimen of human health, but if you are not ready for the thug who wants to throw you in his van, you are not prepared to live a completely healthy life.

This is the first of four articles on Self-Defense. We’ll start with seven principles to keep in mind:

Seven A’s:

Advanced preparation

Awareness of surroundings

Avoid the Area

Assault and Abduction

Aggressive Action

Avenue of escape

Anticipate the Aftermath

Advanced Preparation- If you are not trained in how to thwart an attacker, if you don’t practice the techniques so that they will come automatically when you need them, if you don’t practice with power on someone bigger and stronger than you, then you are not prepared. If your home is not a fortress which would be too difficult to breach, then you are not prepared.

Awareness of Surroundings- You must always be on Yellow Alert whenever you are out of your home (assuming, of course, that you home has been secured, as above.) An awareness can allow you to see a situation enough in advance to either avoid the conflict or to react with strength if it cannot be avoided.
