Over the years, I have tried several daily devotional books; most were disappointments. They would take a small verse of the Bible out of context, isolated from its cultural, theological, and historical background and foreground, and expounded according to the writer’s mystical view of the world.
To me, a devotional book should deal with the real challenges to Christian belief and practice that we Christians face every day. A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works, edited by Patricia S. Klein, does just that. The daily readings are meaty selections from eight of C. S. Lewis’ classic works: Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Problem of Pain, Miracles, A Grief Observed, The Weight of Glory and The Abolition of Man.
Each reading covers a large enough segment to do justice to the topic covered that day. Often, readings are grouped thematically as well to excellent effect. Lewis trivia and biographical touches make a nice personal addition.
A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works is truly a treasure, which I wholeheartedly recommend.
